The Dublin Athletic Booster Club volleyball tournament came to a close Saturday, but not before some fireworks went off in the third place match between area rivals Hico and Dublin.
After Hico won the first match-up between the two in pool play Thursday, Dublin was looking to even the odds, but ultimately fell short as Hico repeated in the tournament thanks to wins of 25-15, 25-27 and 25-16.
The second set was easily the most entertaining as the Dublin Lady Lions raced out to a 10-1 lead. However, Hico wouldn’t go quietly. The Lady Tigers ultimately fought back and tied the game at 24 forcing several extra points before falling in the end. The momentum gained from the comeback seemed to fuel them through the third set which saw them claim the third place spot in the tournament.
“That was huge, I told the girls before this that we know we wanted the championship game, but last year we were in the third place game of the consolation bracket,” said Hico head volleyball coach Julia Plaster. “This is huge, we’ve been doing some crazy good things this year. To beat Dublin once was great for these girls, but to beat them twice was outstanding.”
Looking ahead, Dublin will play next on Tuesday in DeLeon and Hico will travel to Comanche.
