The Honeybees drew a tough pool in their third day of Volleypalooza Saturday which featured a match-up against reigning 4A state champion Decatur, whom Stephenville pushed to the brink.
The Bees dropped the first set to Decatur 25-18, but responded with a dominating performance of their own as they tied the match at one set a piece thanks to a second set 25-17 victory
The third set was a nail biter for both sides, but Decatur finally squeaked out a 25-23 victory. However, Stephenville let the Eagles know that should the two meet in the playoffs later this season that it won’t be a cakewalk.
Statistics wise, the Honeybees had a well rounded performance against Decatur as most of the team were part of the formula for the near upset. Kaleigh Conger and Kourtney Seaton both registered 9 kills, while Chelsea Gillespie tallied 23 assists and Kylee Ponder hit a team high 21 digs.
The day didn’t get any easier after Decatur as Bryan also defeated Stephenville eliminating them from the 48-team tournament after a 20-25, 25-22 and 25-23 victory.
Overall, the Honeybees went 2-6 in the tournament which featured a mostly 5A and 6A field and dropped their season record to 12-16.
