E-T readers may have seen the Chamber of Commerce's ribbon cutting picture in early May when Kate and Bobby Mote opened their new coffee shop in The Cellar on West College on the courthouse square.

Folks in rodeo know the name Bobby Mote for his bareback riding prowess, a sport that along with his wife, Kate has put them in a lot of towns, including Stephenville in the course of a season.

They liked what they saw here in the people, lifestyle and central location in the U.S., so along with kids Trey, 8, Laura, 11, and Charley, 14, they moved to the Huckabay area from Redmond, Oregon.

“We like Texas and kept coming through here and it felt very comfortable," Bobby said. "It’s a great place to raise kids, we like the people and the location really works for rodeo. I was at a rodeo in Arkansas last night and I’m here today. That just wasn’t possible from Oregon.”

Asked how they got into the coffee shop business, Kate says, “We just noticed that there wasn’t a locally-owned coffee shop and thought we’d like to put one in that's a friendly, easy-going positive place where people could relax and spend as much time as they want."

Bobby echoes Kate's thoughts, "We didn't want a chain store. We wanted a friendly, positive place with good food and good people and that's what people get when they come in here."

Rodeo Grounds serves espresso and coffee, bagels and pastries for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, oatmeal brownies and smoothies.

They deliver to shops and offices on the downtown square. They'll also meet you on the curb with your order if you call in or text in advance so you don’t have to park and get out of your car.

They’re open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Call 541-325-2520.

By the way, the mobile unit that used to sit over by the bowling alley and Ranger College has been replaced by this store.
