DALLAS (AP) — A 15-year-old Dallas girl has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the slaying of a 2-month-old baby drowned in a shallow bowl of water.
The girl appeared in a Dallas County court Friday where she admitted responsibility for the January death of Justice Hull at her mother's apartment. She told police she didn't want her mother to adopt the baby.
The 40-year sentence is the maximum District Judge Cheryl Lee Shannon could impose.
Dallas County prosecutors had wanted to try the girl in adult court, meaning she could have received up to a life sentence for capital murder, but Shannon denied the request.
Under terms of the sentence, the girl remains in juvenile custody until she's 19, then could be released or transferred to an adult prison.
