A pile of roofing material and trash has been dumped in a ditch on CR 161 between Stephenville and Morgan Mill, frustrating county officials and nearby residents who say the problem has gotten worse in recent weeks.

“It’s probably about 10 tons,” Commissioner Scot Jackson said Thursday. "If someone sees this happening, get the license plate and description.”

Jackson said it will cost the county about $1,000 to clean up.

An Erath County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to the scene Wednesday night to investigate.

While illegal dumping is nothing new, the problem has increased in the wake of recent storms.

Sheriff Tommy Bryant said he believes residents and roofing companies looking to get rid of damaged roofing materials are behind much of the recent trash dumped across various areas of the county.

“Unfortunately we might be seeing more of this since all the roofing companies have come into town,” Bryant said.

Anyone with information should call the sheriff's office at 965-3338.
