The Stephenville basketball program didn’t have to look far to find its new head basketball coach. Yellow Jacket assistant coach Bill Brooks was named the new head of the program at the board of trustee's meeting Tuesday night.

Brooks has been a familiar face in the basketball program serving the past two years as a junior varsity coach and varsity assistant. He's even taken the reins as the head coach once before in a postseason game back in the 2013-14 season against Lampasas, which the Jackets won, while former head basketball coach Jonathan Normand, who stepped down after being accepting into a doctoral program at Tarleton State University, was away for the birth of his two sons.

“Coach Brooks has been a part of our successful program over the last several years,” said Stephenville Athletic Director Alan Haire. “He has a positive influence and outlook each day and I think that the kids respond well to that. I’ve watched him work with the kids here and I love the positive nature in which he coaches.”

Brooks, who is currently finishing up his second year at Stephenville High School, said being a head basketball coach has been a longtime dream.

“It’s really been a goal of mine to get to this level and be a head basketball coach, so I was pretty excited to receive this opportunity,” said Brooks. “As of now, I haven’t really thought too much about what I want to achieve here or what goals we are going to set. It’s all still new to me being in this position. However, I do want to talk with the staff and the kids to make sure we’re all on the same page in what we want to accomplish. Our ultimate goal is to continue the success the program has had over the last few years and we hope to do that.”
