To say it's been a wet few weeks is an understatement.

As of Monday, Stephenville has officially received 11.57 inches of rain this month alone - the most in 20 years, according to local weather watcher Dr. Stuart Chilton.

"The previous monthly record in the past 20 years was 10.68 inches in August 1996," he said.

Since April 1, Stephenville has seen 18.22 inches of rain across the area, bringing the total for the year to 26.13 inches.

"This is more rainfall than the 12-month total of 22.27 inches we received last year," he said.

Chilton has been keeping records of rain totals for years and speculated that the largest amount of rain ever to fall in Stephenville occurred in May 1957.

"Within that 24-hour period, 12.50 inches fell," he said. "I can recall it rained all night and the next morning water was over East Washington Street and within a half-block of Jake and Dorothy's Cafe before it began receding. The City Park was flooded and the old city swimming pool, which was located immediately south of the Rec Hall was under water."

While Erath County residents work to dry out, more wet weather is expected this week and into the Memorial Day weekend.
