The skies were good to the folks at the 3rd annual Cody and Jenny Ohl's Chute Out PBR bull riding event Saturday night and the event in turn was good to four-year old Madison Burt who is battling desmoplastic medulloblastoma brain cancer. After the event, $10,000 was given to Jason Burt, her father, to help cover the little girl's medical expenses.
Just after Madison's diagnosis and surgery in February, Madison's father wrote in an email to his brother, David Durbin, "We have never felt the level of pain that we experienced on Monday night when we found out about the brain tumor, until we almost lost her Tuesday morning. It was unbearable.
"We were transported to Austin and neurosurgeon, Dr. George along with the 14 other doctors explained what was going on and what the surgery would entail. Jes (his fiance) and I had a peace roll over us and in only 3 1/2 hours we got the news that they removed 100% of the tumor, and that was confirmed in today's MRI results. Praise God!"
Durbin describes what the family has been going through: "We found out about the cancer mid-February of 2015 after several failed attempts from the doctors to find out what was causing severe sleep-depriving headaches for Madison.
"A CT scan detected 'something' and she was rushed to Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin in the middle of an ice storm and the whole family rushed all across Texas to be there because we were informed it was too late for Madison.
"Since the brain surgery (the family) has been at St. Jude’s in Memphis, Tennessee. They have about two more months there and then will be enduring six weeks in Jacksonville, Florida and then six months of oral chemo at home.”
That's where Cody and Jenny Ohl's bull riding event comes in. A special head-to-head match featuring J.B. Mauney and J.W. Harris had a $10,000 winner-take-all purse, but the riders agreed before the event that the money would go to Madison's family and that's exactly what happened.
In a statement on their Facebook page the Ohls said, "We want to say a special THANK YOU to all of our awesome sponsors, volunteers, PBR bull riders, J.W. Harris, J.B. Mauney, personnel, contractors, and most importantly all of you fans! Without all of you this event would not be possible!
"We were so fortunate that the rain and storms held off until everyone was gone. God is good!
"J.B. Mauney won the PBR Chute Out event! Unfortunately, both J.W. and J.B. bucked off of their match bulls. But Miss Madison and her family received $10,000 to help with her medical bills."
