HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — The mother of a man accused in the shooting deaths of two police officers says her son is addicted to drugs and has mental problems.
Mary Smith told The Associated Press on Monday that her son, 29-year-old Marvin Banks, looked high in photos after his arrest and said: "You could tell something was wrong with him."
Banks and his 6-year-old son live with Smith.
Banks and his girlfriend were charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate, who were slain Saturday night after a traffic stop. Police have not said what led to the gunfire.
Banks' 26-year-old brother, Curtis Banks, is charged with two counts of being an accessory to murder, and 28-year-old Cornelius Clark was arrested on an obstruction charge.
