Stephenville resident Brent Graves announced Tuesday evening that he will challenge J.D. Sheffield for state representative of District 59.

In a telephone interview Wednesday, Graves said he and his wife Ashley, executive director of Choices Center, have considered entering the race for more than a year. He said he believes his conservative values will appeal to area voters.

"Our political philosophies are on different ends of the spectrum," Graves said of Sheffield. "I disagree with Mr. Sheffield on many issues but our position on protecting the unborn is the clearest contrast there is. Its time for conservative representation in District 59.

Graves and his family moved to Stephenville from Amarillo in 2012 to purchase United Country Realty.

"We didn't have any political aspirations at the time," he said. "But we were familiar with the area and always loved it. When we got the opportunity to purchase this office (United Country), it was a no-brainer."

This is Graves' first run for political office.

He said he would be more than happy to talk with constituents who can reach him by calling his office at 254-965-4040.
