Sporting a 2-2 record after their season-opening appearance at the Houston Winter Invitational at Minute Maid Park, Tarleton State travels to San Antonio Friday for a weekend series against St. Mary’s.
The Texans and the Rattlers met in the second day of competition in Houston. TSU claimed an 8-4 win behind a two-RBI triple by Peter McMahon in the Tarleton sixth that ignited an 8-run rally.
The Purple and White are led by Jonathan Schmitz and Eythan Lenz. Schmitz had multi-hit outings in all four of the Texans’ games, including a 3-for-3 day against Winona State in the season opener. Thus far, Schmitz, the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week, carries a league-best .667 average with 10 hits, three RBIs and a pair of doubles.
Lenz, the conference Pitcher of the Week, has taken the mound in three of the Texans’ four games, allowing just one hit and carding five Ks. He was the winning pitcher against St. Mary’s.
The Rattlers are 3-2 in the young baseball season, including an 8-6 loss to No. 22 Central Missouri in their final appearance in Houston.
Game time Friday is 3 p.m. The two teams meet for a Saturday double-header scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
