On Thursday the long-standing tradition of Thanksgiving dinner being served at Jake and Dorothy’s Café will be repeated for the 66th year. They’ve been serving up great Turkey Day food since the late Jake and Dorothy Roach opened their café on June 12, 1948 at its present location. Their daughter, owner-operator Kerry Jane Roach, says, “We’ll start the Thanksgiving dinner at 11 a.m. and serve until we run out. That’s usually in the early afternoon.”
Asked about the menu for the feast, Roach replies, “On Thanksgiving Day we serve chicken-fried steak, turkey and dressing, baked ham, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli-and-rice casserole, green or fruit salad, hot rolls, coffee or tea. Dessert is usually carrot cake, apple-walnut cake and pumpkin pie, something like that.”
The price is $14.95.
Roach said the cakes, pies and other baked items come fresh-made from the Washington Street Bakery that’s located in the back part of the building at Jake and Dorothy’s Café.
“We’re open on Thanksgiving from 5:30 a.m. to midnight, same as we always are Sunday through Thursday. Those are our regular hours. We’re open 364½ days a year. We only close for half a day on Christmas.”
