If you’re looking for homemade ice cream, fresh baked pies, homemade potato salad, premium cuts of beef and a great lunch menu, including “Pig Peppers” – think cream-cheese stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon - The Garden on W. Washington Street is your place.

Here’s what we learned from Jose Huerta whose family owns this new restaurant.

Your family owns this restaurant. Do you also run the business and who else in your family is involved?

My mother, Laura, is the head cook. We all help out but she’s the one who makes it work. What we do here is high-quality home cooking, All of the things you see on our menu are her recipes. She does all the cooking and baking. My brother Junior also manages here and my other brother Alex does just about anything that needs doing.

Tell our readers a little bit about your menus.

We’re open Wednesday through Sunday for both lunch and dinner. Right now we have 11 items plus sides on the lunch menu. Lunch is $7.99 for entrees and we have things like chicken-fried steak and chicken-fried chicken, four-ounce sirloin with one side and garden salad, fried or grilled shrimp and Pig Peppers. It’s a wide variety.

Our shrimp is always fresh from the gulf and we hand prepare it here. Also, we have specials every day, things like Philly cheese steak or steak sandwiches for instance, and we have steak specials on Saturdays.

On the dinner menu we have over 30 items and all kinds of choices like chicken or fish dishes, hamburger and salads, but we specialize in our steaks. We serve Sterling Silver meats, which means all cuts are either prime or the top tier of choice. We use cuts that are graded lower than that. We think if you come here to have a great steak or pork filet, that’s what you will get and it starts with only serving the higher cuts of meat.

So we start with that and then my mother adds her special touch. The pork filet, for instance comes with peach sauce and we have sides like red beans and rice, fried okra, homemade fries and sweet potato fries.

Is there anything more you’d like our readers to know about The Garden restaurant?

I guess I should mention our dessert menu. My mother bakes all the pies and that includes, buttermilk, apple, coconut, pecan, key lime, lemon meringue, buttermilk pecan, cherry and chocolate. We also serve blueberry cheesecake, homemade ice cream, cherry cheesecake, volcano cake, peach cobbler

The main thing I want to emphasize that my mother is a great cook and we take pride in serving delicious, homemade comfort food. This is a family business and that kind of cooking is what we grew up with. That’s what we want to share with people here.

The Garden is located at 1044 W. Washington across the parking lot from Sonic. It’s available for special occasions and they cater both in the restaurant or at your event.

Lunch is served from 11 to 4. Open Wednesday and Thursday 11to 9, Friday and Saturday 11-9:30 and Sunday 11 to 3.
