Ever hear the saying, "There's nothing like a homegrown tomato?" Well if you agree then the Stephenville Organic Gardening Club is hosting an event just for you - the inaugural Homegrown Tomato Contest.

The contest will take place June 21 and feature a variety of categories to be judged including heirloom tomato, hybrid, most unusual and participation.

"All that we ask is that the tomatoes are homegrown," said club president Charles May. "It doesn't have to be grown organically, any method is welcome."

The idea for the contest started when May began growing tomatoes several years ago.

"I knew they had contests like this in other cities and some of them are really big deals," he said. "Jacksonville, Texas has a three-day event dedicated to a tomato contest and it brings in thousands of dollars to the city. I'd like to see us build this event into something bigger as the years go on."

The contest will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, at the small pavilion at Stephenville City Park. Winners will be announced at 12:15 p.m.

There is no fee to enter.
