Councilman Russ McDanel was elected to the position of mayor pro tem Tuesday during the Stephenville City Council's monthly meeting.
Having been elected unanimously by the council, McDanel stands ready to step in for Mayor Kenny Weldon should he for any reason be unable to perform his duties as mayor.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary the term pro tem means: “for the present time but not permanently.” In other words, if someone is serving in a certain occupation or position of leadership, and that person for any reason cannot perform his or her duties, a pro tem person steps in and does the job.
In the case of a political leader such as the president of the United States, the vice president temporarily fills that role should the president become unable to perform his or her duties. When the president is able to step back in, the pro tem president, in this case the vice president, returns to the normal duties of his or her own office.
