The tight-knit community of Morgan Mill is rallying to help one of its own.
Dean Minix, a resident of the small town and professor at Tarleton State University, has been hospitalized since April.
Jonathan Hutson, who has known Minix for years, said Minix suffered a skull fracture after some type of fall. He remains in serious condition at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital, where he recently suffered a setback.
"Dean and I met at the Dining Hall when I worked for the Tarleton Police Department," Hutson said. "We struck up an immediate friendship, then I moved to Morgan Mill and found out we were neighbors."
Over the years, the friendship grew stronger and now Hutson, along with help from the Morgan Mill Volunteer Fire Department, is organizing a fundraiser for Minix's family at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 27, at the Morgan Mill Community Center where there will be a barbecue dinner for $10 per plate.
Dean Cantrell, president of the board for the fire department, called Minix a "good man" who has been a volunteer with the organization for years.
"Dean has always been willing to help out the fire department and the community in any way he can," Cantrell said. "Now it's time for us to help him."
