ALVARADO - Stephenville got off to a strong start to the District 7-3A tennis tournament that was delayed by rain and hampered by a cold, blustery wind Wednesday.

The event continued into the evening, with Chawtana Edwards and Rachel Hazzard each headed to the third round in girls singles and brothers Ryan and Reagan Drake advancing to the semis in boys singles.

Stephenville had doubles and mixed doubles teams also in action at the meet, hosted by Alvarado High School.

"It's certainly not ideal," quipped Stephenville head coach Fran Metzger of the conditions as some players elected to play with warmups over their uniforms to stay warm and others donned jackets and gloves and huddled close while watching their teammates. "But you can't do anything about the weather. All you can do is play through it."

With the meet delayed more than three hours and not starting until afternoon, none of the semifinal matches had begun as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.
