The Tarleton State Texans dropped its series-opener against the No. 4-ranked West Texas A&M Buffs, 8-4, in Lone Star Conference action Friday evening at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville.

After falling behind early 3-0, the Texans (15-8, 6-5 LSC) pulled within a run in the second inning on a two-run double from Evan Robinson and then later tied the game on a run-scoring single from Kevin Meredith.

Both offenses would stall through the four innings until WT's Dylan Dyson broke the 3-all tie with a three-run shot to right field in the top of the seventh inning.

The Buffs (22-4, 11-2 LSC) would tack on another two runs later in the inning, and Tarleton would get just one more run home in the game on Christopher Patton's pinch hit solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

After giving up three runs to the Buffs early, Tarleton starting pitcher Jacob French (L, 5-2) would settle down over the next five innings, but was relieved in the top of the seventh inning after giving up back-to-back hits to start the inning.

French was hit with just his second loss on the season, as he yielded the five runs on 14 hits, while striking out three WT batters.

WT's Dylan James (W, 6-0) gave up three runs on five hits and struck out nine batters on his way to earning his sixth win of the season.

Meredith led the Texans at the plate with two hits on the day, while Robinson's two runs batted in were a team-high in the series-opening contest.
