Huckabay tackled its first playoff challenge Thursday night, coasting by Mount Calm 58-31 for an area championship.
But the tough tests always associated with the state playoffs begin Tuesday for the Indians. That's when they battle Coolidge at 7 p.m. at Keene High School with a regional tournament berth on the line. The winner meets Miller Grove or Bellevue in next Friday's semifinals of the 1A Division II Region III Tournament at Tyler Junior College.
Gavin Fuentes scored 17 points to pace a balanced Indian attack that featured five scorers with seven or more. Cade Bray poured 12 points through the net, Junior Fragoza, Garrett Stewart and Ky Bray each added seven, Levi Dowell had four and Eduardo Sanchez and Cade Little both scored two.
Coolidge eliminated Lipan, which finished third behind Lingleville and Huckabay in District 17, in the early game of Thursday's doubleheader at Rio Vista, 73-70. Coolidge is ranked 13th and Huckabay 14th by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
