In the past few weeks, the Stephenville High School Yellow Jacket band has participated in the Region 7 Honor Concert and the Jazz Band concert. SHS Band Director Michael Childs said it's the “payoff” for their hard work in the fall.
Band students compete against other bands from around the area for position, something Childs said is highly competitive.
He said students earned their positions in the honor bands through the All-State Band audition process that begins in August when the audition music is released. At this time, students around the state begin preparing for the auditions.
Once selected to one of the bands, Childs said the students worked with well respected college-level educators from around the state in preparation for the concert. The students and educators work side-by-side to create and practice a concert they later preform for the public.
Childs said Tarleton State University in Stephenville graciously hosted the clinics and concert days, not only this year, but in years past as well. He said the facilities provided by the university are perfect for the event, as well as housing so many students at once.
“These students work on their audition music almost entirely outside of class time to prepare,” Childs said. “ This is music they work on in addition to their classroom demands in the fall and the music is very demanding. I’m very proud of their accomplishments.”
