It was a crime so brutal that it shocked veteran law enforcement officials and horrified an entire community.
And more than four months after Erath County resident Ricky Stephens, 43, was found, beaten, burned and left for dead, authorities are still trying to locate one man in connection with the case. Danny Dittoe, 39, is charged with aggravated assault and has been on the run since Stephens was found barely alive on property located on FM 205 on Feb. 17. Chief Deputy Jason Upshaw has been involved with the case since its beginning, but his patience is wearing thin. He is vowing to arrest anyone found hiding Dittoe. "We are at the point now that we can and will file charges on anyone harboring Danny Dittoe," Upshaw said Tuesday. "So whoever is hiding him will go to jail when we find him - and we will find him." Upshaw believes Dittoe is still in the area based on tips the Erath County Sheriff's Office has received. Lanny Walton and Dustin Davis have already been arrested and charged in the case. They are each being held on a $750,000 bond at the Erath County Jail. Meanwhile, Stephens is still struggling to recover and remains in a nursing home undergoing physical and occupational therapy. Anyone with information about the case should call the sheriff's office at 254-965-3338 or Crime Stoppers at 965-CASH.
