Remember the first time your parents helped you ride a bike? More than likely they made sure you had a helmet on whether it was the right fit or not. Safety seems to be one thing everyone is willing to improve. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, in 2011 there were a total of 677 deaths of bicyclists. The 14 and younger age group accounted for 9 percent of those deaths.

If you have a child who bicycle, then head over to Tarleton's Wisdom Gym July 5 to attend the bicycle helmet giveaway. The Texas Medical Association Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield, local physicians and Prudential will be hosting Hard Hats for Little Kids helmet giveaway event. If you have a child 18 years or younger, they can attend and be fitted for a brand new helmet free of charge that is guaranteed to fit correctly. State Rep. J.D. Sheffield, District 59, is helping sponsor the event.

“These Hard Hat events have provided helmets to children across the state of Texas. Many injuries can be prevented by wearing a helmet, and we are pleased to be able to offer this service in the Stephenville area,” Sheffield said.

Andrew Johnson, Sheffield’s chief of staff, said the event will be held in conjunction with the Kiwanis' annual Firecracker 100 bike race.

“We think it’s great the Kiwanis are letting us team up with them at their great event to help spread the awareness of bicycle safety," Johnson said. "Erath County has never had an event like this so, we’re pretty excited.”
