GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) — Police say an 8-year-old boy has drowned in a north Texas lake while swimming with friends.
Grand Prairie Police spokesman Lyle Gensler says that the boy, whose name was not released, was swimming on the Cedar Hill side of the lake southwest of Dallas Monday. The boy was playing in waist to shoulder-deep water with friends at the swim beach when he went under.
The boy's mother called 911 after a friend told her the boy had gone under. He was below the surface for an estimated 30 minutes. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful though he was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Gensler says it was the city's first drowning this year.
