GALVESTON, Texas (AP) Authorities say three people who went missing over the weekend while swimming on Galveston Island are presumed drowned.

The Houston Chronicle reports ( Monday that the three are missing along the San Luis Pass, considered a dangerous area to swim because of strong currents. Signs on shore warn, "No swimming. Dangerous currents."

The U.S. Coast Guard was involved in a search Sunday for a man and his 10-year-old son from the Houston suburb of Missouri City. Authorities say the child was caught in a riptide and his father went to his aid. Soon after both disappeared in the surf.

A search was suspended Saturday for an 18-year-old from nearby League City who went missing while swimming at the pass. Authorities say he was overtaken by a large wave.
