More details are surfacing about a 79-year-old man who was airlifted late Wednesday afternoon after he was hit by a pickup between Bluff Dale and Morgan Mill.

Joe Fleming of Bluff Dale was running on his regular route along FM 1188 when he was struck by a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, according to DPS Trooper Gary Rozzell.

He was breathing, but unresponsive when medics arrived and received severe lacerations to his face and arms.

Fleming was jogging east on 1188 just after 5 p.m. as temperatures reached 99 degrees when the eastbound pickup approached him from behind. The driver, John Perry of Bluff Dale, slowed his vehicle and moved safely into the left-hand lane away from the runner. However, a quarter mile east of CR 153 Fleming began crossing the road to turn around, as he always did at the point, when the pickup hit him.

Perry and passing motorists stopped and shaded Fleming while help arrived.

He was taken by air ambulance to a Fort Worth hospital in serious condition. His current condition is not known because of patient privacy laws.

"Mr. Perry did everything he was supposed to do. He reduced his speed and gave the runner more space on the road with no oncoming traffic," said Trooper B.J. Hill said. "Mr. Fleming was at fault."

Fleming was in excellent health and ran 10 miles every day, according to a neighbor.

"He ran by my house every day always waving as he went by," said Ricky Green. "It was like clockwork."
