The United Methodist Women are preparing to give school supplies to 235 local students in need of assistance with costly back-to-school shopping.

"We couldn't be more excited to help more students and families than ever before," said Linda Beach, who organized this year's supply drive with Evelyn Velchoff. "We are able to offer all supplies for each grade level to our neighbors because of the generous support from the people of Stephenville."

Families can pick up school supplies from 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the lower level of First United Methodist office across from the church. School shoes and haircut vouchers will also be distributed.

Only those who applied in advance and were accepted can receive assistance.

UMW funds the school supplies drive through donations at the annual baked potato luncheon in March and a summer garage sale. Members of First Presbyterian Church and other volunteers helped with donations and packaging the supplies.

"We want to thank all those who have supported this community-wide effort to benefit so many children each year," Beach said.
