LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton (25-9, 10-1) exploded for 12 runs and 23 hits over two games as the TexAnns won their fourth straight Lone Star Conference series by sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader against Cameron (12-18, 3-8).
Game 1: Tarleton 6, Cameron 1
Tarleton strung together 13 hits to put six runs on the board and get back in the win column with a 6-1 victory over Cameron in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
In the first inning, Tarleton senior Katie Welborn got to swing the bat in game action for the first time in over a week – after being intentionally walked in all four at-bats last Saturday – and responded by crushing a home run over the center field wall to put Tarleton up 1-0.
The TexAnns broke the game open in the third by posting a four-spot.
After Orf doubled and Welborn walked on four pitches, Samantha Swanda struck for the big blow with a three-run homer to dead center. McKaylee Pittman added an RBI single later to plate Bailee Mauldin and give Tarleton a 5-0 lead.
Abigail Tammen added her first homer of the season in the top of the fifth to put Tarleton up 6-0.
Cameron broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly, but could do no more damage against Tarleton ace, Swanda.
Swanda went the distance allowing one run on two hits and seven walks while striking out 10.
Tammen was a perfect 4-4 at the plate while Mauldin, Swanda and Orf each added two hits each. Welborn, Pittman and Kelsey Latta added one hit apiece in the 13-hit effort.
Game 2: Tarleton 6, Cameron 3
The Tarleton offensive onslaught continued in the second game as the TexAnns poured on six runs and 10 hits en route to a 6-3 victory and a doubleheader sweep of the Aggies.
Tarleton got started early with three runs in the opening frame on RBI singles by Mauldin and Latta and a bases loaded walk by Amber Sotelo to plate the final run of the inning with two away.
Swanda tacked on another run in the top of the fifth with a leadoff solo homer to give Tarleton a 4-0 lead.
Cameron finally got to Tarleton starter Randi Fentress in the sixth inning with an RBI double and a two-run homer to center, but Fentress held off the rally and escaped with a 4-3 lead.
The TexAnns put the game away in the ensuing frame with a two-run blast by Kelsey Latta to plate Eryn Freitas – who pinch ran for Mauldin.
Fentress got the win by going the distance, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Swanda and Latta recorded three hits each with a homer while Mauldin also had two hits. Arianna Rodriguez and Tammen had the other Tarleton hits.
The final game of the series starts at 1 p.m. today.
