Stephenville is sending two athletes to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division I state powerlifting meets after their performances in last weekend’s regional competitions.
Honeybee Kristen Hayes is headed to state for the second straight year after posting the automatic qualifying total of 820 pounds on her second dead lift. The total also won her sixth place at the regional.
Hayes began her day by posting a best lift of 365 pounds in the squat, then added 150 on the bench press. Her second pull in the dead lift was 305 pounds, exactly what she needed to punch her ticket to state.
On the boys side, senior Nic Perez qualified for his first state appearance by taking second in the super heavyweight division in Dripping Springs Saturday.
Perez pushed up 600 pounds on the squat and 390 on the bench before pulling 645 in the dead lift. The 1,635-pound total wasn’t his best of the season, but it was more than enough for him to advance.
Seniors D.J. Vanden Berge and Austin Melvin competed at regionals in the 275 and 220-pound classes, respectively, but neither posted a total.
The girls state meet is set for March 18 in Corpus Christi while the boys will compete March 26 in Abilene.
