Stephenville is Class 4A football's new No. 1, according to the Associated Press poll released Monday.

Copperas Cove, No. 1 in every previous 2007 poll, fell to Brownwood Friday, 17-10.

Stephenville, patiently awaiting its chance at No. 2, disposed of Joshua 64-11 to take over the top spot.

The No. 1 ranking is the first for Stephenville since 1999, the same season in which the Yellow Jackets picked up their fourth state championship. They have been fighting for state title No. 5 ever since.

La Marque, the undefeated defending state champion in 4A-DII, has moved up to No. 2. The Cougars trailed Friendswood 20-7 last week, but finished with 20 unanswered points in a 27-20 nailbiter.

Highland Park and Corpus Christi Calallen each move up one spot to fourth and fifth, respectively.

With its win over Copperas Cove, Brownwood makes the biggest jump in the poll, going from No. 10 to No. 6.

Wichita Falls Rider stays put at No. 7, while Copperas Cove falls to No. 8

New Braunfels is No. 9, while Everman rounds out the top 10.
