STEPHENVILLE-Tarleton State football held its annual Purple vs. White game here Thursday, in what amounted to a full dress rehearsal for the season opener, now just eight days away.,
Due to a delay caused by storms in the area, complete results were not available at press time. After one quarter of action, the Purple squad, consisting of the players expected to be active during the regular season, led the White team, 14-0.
A big opening kickoff return by Trey Lewis set the Purple first-team offense up deep in White territory. They were unable to take advantage, however, coming up short on on a rushing attempt on fourth-and-one.
A quick stop by the defense set up good field position for the Purple’s second offensive possession. This time they pushed the ball across the goal line via the run, and the point after made it 7-0.
After a barrage of penalties that are typical of a pre-season scrimmage, two-time defending Lone Star Conference Defensive Back of the Year Ranardrick Phillips made the biggest highlight of the period. The senior strong safety picked off a pass and weaved through would-be tacklers on his way to converting the return into a touchdown.
Tarleton reverts to regular-season practice mode next week, with the season opener against East Central set for Aug. 25 at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville. While East Central is a fellow member of the LSC, the contest will not count toward conference standings.
