ALEDO — The Stephenville Yellow Jackets got back on track, hanging on to win a thriller over the rival Bearcats, 59-54.
Trey Taylor led the team with 14 points, Cody Davis had 13 and Jace and Jared Mills added 12 apiece.
Aledo led briefly early in the fourth quarter, after Will Saint hit a jumper from the free throw line to put the home team up 42-41. But Davis sank a pair of free throws on Stephenville’s next possession and the Yellow Jackets never trailed again.
After a three-seconds violation on Aledo, Jace Mills hit two more free throws to run the lead to three.
Soon after, he hit Davis for a basket inside, and Taylor hit a 3-pointer that gave the Yellow Jackets a 50-43 lead halfway through the fourth quarter.
Jordan Burchill had a layup for Aledo that cut the Stephenville lead to five, but that was as close as the Bearcats would get. The Yellow Jackets earned the victory at the free throw line, as Davis and Jace and Jared Mills hit two, and Taylor hit three, all within the game’s final two minutes.
Jared Mills hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter, and Taylor added another deep shot to give Stephenville an 11-7 lead after the first quarter.
Scoring picked up in the second for both sides, as the Yellow Jackets edged the Bearcats, 20-19.
Stephenville trailed midway through the second after a putback by Aledo’s Daniel Ford, but Davis hit Taylor for another 3-pointer that made it 19-17 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
Kolten Parker hit six straight free throws to give Stephenville a 28-21 lead, and Jace Mills added a 3-pointer before the half.
The junior varsity lost a heartbreaker, 63-62.
