Stephenville (0-2) rallied late, but never found an answer for Nick Williams in the paint. The post man scored 23 points to lead White Settlement Brewer past the Yellow Jackets 49-42 at Gandy Gym Monday night.
Brewer jumped out to a 41-28 lead before Stephenville showed signs of life. Justin Lanham hit a three and then took a Brewer turnover the other way for a fast-break lay-up to cut the Jacketsí deficit to six at 44-38 with 1:58 still to play.
Lanham drilled another bomb to make it 44-41 seconds later, but Brewer regathered its composure and finished strong.
Williams hit one of two free throws to extend the Bearsí lead to four before a pair lay-up made it 47-41 with 1:05 to go.
Cody Stevens hit one of two from the charity stripe with 48 seconds left, but the Jackets would get no closer as another Brewer lay-in finished the scoring.
All eight of Lanhamís points came during the late rally, while Josh Jenkins (11) and Cody Stevens (10) paced the Stephenville scoring efforts. Dalton Griffin added nine, while Juder Stidham scored four.
Stephenville returns to action Tuesday at 3A power Abilene Wylie.
