It wasn’t a win, but it was enough.
Stephenville (16-5-1) tied San Angelo Lakeview, 1-1, on the road Friday, to secure a second-place finish in District 8-4A with one contest remaining.
The Honeybees host Brownwood Tuesday in the regular season finale. JV action begins at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m. Senior night festivities highlight the agenda for the varsity battle.
The Honeybees held a 1-0 lead for most of the match, thanks to a Caitlyn Cline take-away and empty-net goal.
“I guess the goalie misplayed it just enough, because Caitlyn just stole it and had an empty net,” said Stephenville coach Casey Weil.
Goal keeper Hillari Chambers and the Honeybee defense protected the lead until the closing minutes, but finally surrendered the tying goal.
With 2:45 left in play, a Lakeview forward sent a high shot into the corner.
“It was a great goal,” Weil said. “There was nothing Hillari could have done about it, that’s for sure. They started to build it up in the back field, then they got it to the forward and she pounded it.”
The tying goal stood through two 10-minute overtimes.
With his team’s position in the playoffs already secure, Weil has begun planning for possible opening-round playoff sites and dates.
If the district seasons ended today, both the Honeybees and the Yellow Jackets would be pitted against Fort Worth Arlington Heights in the bi-district playoffs. Weil said he and SHS boys coach Ramsay Wright have discussed trying to have the games back-to-back in a neutral location.
