STEPHENVILLE - Shelby Sharp scored a pair of goals in the first half on Friday, and Stephenville (18-2-2, 7-1-1) held off a second-half rally by Copperas Cove to claim a 3-2 win in District 8-4A soccer action.

Sharp scored at the 27:10 mark to put Stephenville ahead 1-0, then made it 2-0 with 10:57 left in the opening half. Ray Monreal and David Huxen posted assists on the goals.

Copperas Cove pulled within one early in the second half with a goal at the 30:51 mark, but Stephenville answered with a Mason Taylor shot that found the back of the net after an assist from Brandon Hall.

The Bull Dawgs scored again with 12:40 remaining, but it was too little, too late.

“We weren’t quite as sharp as we usually are,” Stephenville coach Ramsay Wright said. “Except for Shelby. I guess he lived up to his last name because he looked really sharp.”

Stephenville, currently sitting in second place in the 8-4A standings, visits first-place Abilene Wylie at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. JV action is first at 5:30 p.m.

Wylie defeated Stephenville 1-0 in the first loop through district play. The schools split the 8-4A championship in 2007.
