Senior strikers Caitlyn Cline and Kayla Gregory scored three goals each and Cline added three assists as Stephenville (4-3 in district) bombed rival Brownwood 7-1 in a district soccer match last Friday.
The Honeybees, who do not play today due to state-mandated TAKS testing, also picked up scoring contributions from another pair of seniors as Alex Huckabee - who just finished her stellar high school basketball career and is playing varsity soccer for the first time - had an assist and Caitlyn Wooley provided the other goal.
“We played that team 2-1/2 weeks ago and lost 3-2,” said Stephenville head coach Casey Weil. “Since then we’ve made some changes, moved some people around and put (Cline and Gregory) back up front together.
“They were pretty much unstoppable up front (Friday),” he added. “I’ve been to the last few state tournaments, and I haven’t seen any two forwards work together and dominate the way those two did against Brownwood.”
Weil said his team also played well out of the back, an encouraging sign with Cline back up front to help add to the team’s scoring punch.
“Defensively, we looked great,” said Weil. “We didn’t let them have hardly any chance at all. Their only goal came on a penalty kick.”
