PORTALES, N.M. — The Tarleton TexAnn softball team swept a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader at Eastern New Mexico on Friday.
The TexAnns won the first game in Portales, N.M., 12-5, before taking the second game in a run-rule, 9-0, in six innings.
The TexAnns improve to 19-15 overall and 4-4 in the South Division with sweep while the Zias fell to 17-15 and 2-9 in the division.
The TexAnns had six home runs in the two games, including three from Brittany Terry (two in game two) and two in the second game by Tamra Bradley.
In the first game, the TexAnns jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Nicole Cone singled to right with one out. Terry then homered to left field to put Tarleton ahead, 2-0.
ENMU took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third on two hits and an error.
Tarleton took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Brittnee Rice singled through the left side to start the frame and Elyse Tatum came in to pinch run for the designated player. Cone completed a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second before Terry struck out swinging. With two outs, Samantha Canfield singled to second and advanced to the second bag on a throwing error while Tatum went to third. April Gonzalez then homered down the left field line to put the TexAnns ahead 5-3.
In the top of the sixth, Terry started the inning by being hit by a pitch before Canfield walked. Gonzalez then doubled to left to score Terry. Kaci Phillips walked before Julie Norris singled through the left side to score Canfield and Gozalez. Victoria Kelly then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher on a sac bunt. Bradley then doubled to left center to score Norris and Phillips. Lauren Hattemer then pinch ran for Bradley and scored along with Kelly when Rice doubled to center field. The TexAnns scored the seven runs on five hits and an error to take a 12-3 lead.
ENMU then scored two runs on three hits and an error, but that was all the Zias could get against Norris, who pitched a complete-game victory. She allowed 10 hits and five runs, three earned. She walked two and struck out three.
In game two, the TexAnns jumped out to a lead in the top of the second frame when Terry homered to left center. Gonzalez was then hit by a pitch before Phillips singled to the shortstop on a bunt. Jessica Scallan then had a sacrifice bunt to move the runners before Norris singled down the left field line to score Phillips and Gonzalez to give Tarleton a 3-0 advantage.
The TexAnns added two runs in the top of the third, beginning with a Rice single through the left side. Tatum pinch ran for Rice when Terry homered to center with one out. The TexAnns led 5-0.
In the top of the fourth, Scallan singled to short to open the frame. Norris got a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second before Bradley homered to center with one out to give the TexAnns a 7-0 lead.The TexAnns got the run-rule victory with two runs in the top of the sixth. Norris walked before she was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelly. Bradley homered to left field to give the TexAnns a 9-0 lead, and Lauren Zearfoss held the Zias scoreless.
Zearfoss recorded a complete-game, two-hit victory while walking four and striking out seven.
