Hico head girls basketball coach Brad Stegall said he wanted to beef up his team's schedule.

Mission accomplished.

Stegall has replaced season-opening opponent Breckenridge with defending state champion Brock. The Lady Tigers travel to Brock for a 5:30 p.m. contest today, following a 4:30 p.m. JV battle.

Brock, which also won the 2009 2A title, is ranked No. 1 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches preseason poll, which includes Hico at No. 20.

Stegall said the change was made possible because Breckenridge wanted out of the season opener due to its prolonged playoff run in volleyball.

The Lady Tigers looked up to the challenge in scrimmage play Saturday, using their full-court pressure and uptempo offense to shock 4A Corsicana 56-26 and 3A No. 10 Fairfield 54-14.

"We played back-to-back and just kept at them," Stegall said. "We looked good. I know how those teams look going into the season, but it's one of those things where you don't want to get to excited because they're just scrimmages."

If the Tigers are remotely as successful today, Stegall and all of Hico will have reason to get excited.

"This will definitely be a huge measuring stick for us," Stegall said. "There will be no doubt where we stand after playing Brock."
