RICHARDSON - The Tarleton women's basketball team was picked to finish second in the Lone Star Conference South Division as the annual LSC women's basketball preseason polls were released by the conference office on Tuesday.
Tarleton is coming off its fifth straight winning season after going 16-12 overall and 7-5 in the south division last year. The TexAnns made their sixth consecutive trip to the LSC Tournament last season after winning six of their last seven games. Despite a close contest with Central Oklahoma in the first round of the tournament, Tarleton's season came to an end after falling to the Bronchos by just three points, 66-63.
Tarleton returns 11 letterwinners from last year's squad, including Second Team All-LSC selection JoAnne Jones (13.6 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 54 blocks) along with All-LSC Honorable Mention honorees Sonya Sundberg (8.8 ppg, 118 assists, 51 steals) and Shelby Adamson (10.3 ppg, 78 assists, 59 steals). Adamson was also named the division's Freshman of the Year following her first season of donning the purple and white.
Defending south division and LSC Tournament champions West Texas A&M took top honors in the preseason poll that was voted on by the league's coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives from throughout the region. The Lady Buffs received nine of the 21 first-place votes and tallied 124 total points as the top pick.
The TexAnns received four first-place votes for 110 points to edge Abilene Christian in third with four first-place nods and 108 points. Angelo State was tabbed fourth as they received two first-place votes for 93 points and Texas A&M-Kingsville earned the final two first-place votes and totaled 80 points for the fifth-place nod.
