The famous matched tie-down roping held each October in San Angelo is no stranger to Cody Ohl. The cowboy who lives with his family between Stephenville and Hico has six world titles including the All-Around in 2001 and five tie-down roping championships. Cody has won the Wrangler Cowboy Roping Fiesta in San Angelo for 10 consecutive years and 12 of the past 13. Fred Whitfield beat Cody out his first try for a win, which came in 1996 and his only other loss at this event came in 1999 also to Fred.

At this year’s event, Cody teamed up with Pearl, the PRCA tie-down roping horse of the year. Pearl belongs to State Representative Sid Miller and was trained by Sid’s brother. Lots of money has been won when riding Great Smokin’ Wonder or “Pearl” as she is known. Blu Dornan won a trailer when he rode Pearl at a Lone Star Arena and NFR qualifiers have all won money on her as well as the owner.  Sid has won two world championships riding Pearl. She is another Erath County champion from the Cowboy Capital of the World!

Cody and Pearl competed against Monty Lewis who went out after six head with a torn anterior cruciate in his leg. Tuf Cooper, the son of roping legend Roy “Super-looper” Cooper who took the first four head over Cody but our cowboy came roaring back and the match ended with 105.03 seconds for Cody to 116.31 for Tuf.
