Taylor Harris passed for 419 yards and had three TD strikes during a 34-0 run that helped No. 7 West Texas A&M bury Tarleton State 48-17 in Lone Star Conference South Division action at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon Saturday night.
The Buffaloes improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the LSC South, while Tarleton fell to 1-5 and 1-2, respectively.
The Texans return to action at 3:30 p.m. next Saturday in an LSC crossover game at Texas A&M-Commerce that will be televised live by KTXA channel 21.
A 25-yard Blake Wiest field goal pulled Tarleton within four at 7-3 in the early going, but WT took over from there.
The highlight of WT’s big run came after they were backed up inside their own one following a Tarleton punt. Harris went deep to Stephen Burton, who out-leaped Texan freshman cornerback Dashaun Phillips to snag the pass near midfield before sprinting away for a 99-yard TD.
After the Buffs extended their lead to 41-3, Phillips scored his first career TD when he jumped in front of a WT pass and waltzed 36 yards down the sideline to pay dirt.
The Buffs scored once more before Tarleton’s Jamal Mays hauled in a 36-yard TD pass from backup quarterback Casey Page to provide the final margin.
