Stephenville freshman Gabby Chavarria recorded a personal best total of 730-pounds to claim third place in the 132-pound class at the Texas girls state power lifting meet.
Chavarria’s previous best was 695 pounds, her total from the regional competition.
“That’s incredible to go to the state meet and lift your personal best by 35 pounds,” said Stephenville coach Joseph Gillespie. “I can’t say enough good things about Gabby and what a great competitor she is.”
As Chavarria powered her way onto the scene as a freshman, Colby Lozano has been preparing to make his exit a memorable one as a senior.
Lozano won the regional championship to earn an automatic bid to the state competition at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
According to Gillespie, Lozano is in a good position to finish first, but could easily drop as far as fifth.
“It’s that close,” Gillespie said. “Between first and fifth, the difference (in regional totals) is only 20 pounds.”
