BRECKENRIDGE, TX – WestTexasPigskin.com will host the first annual West Texas High School Football Skills Combine Saturday, July 18, at Buckaroo Stadium on the campus of Breckenridge High School.
Players entering grades 9-12 are eligible to participate in the combine, and each player will be put through a series of individual and team drills to better assess their abilities entering the 2009 football season. Athletes will have the opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of college coaches and will be provided with a DVD of their performance to review and use for their own purposes.
Athletes will begin the day by running two 40-yard dashes, one each on artificial and natural surfaces; bench press 185-pounds as many reps as possible; record vertical and broad jump measurements; and run a 20-yard shuttle drill. The afternoon will consist of organized team drills. Players will be broken into four groups consisting of quarterbacks; running backs, wide receivers and tight ends; offensive and defensive lineman; and linebackers and defensive backs.
Longview defensive coordinator Casey Pearce will be the event coordinator and will be assisted by no less than five coaches from around the state. Pearce earned All-American honors in football and track at Howard Payne and is entering his 13th season coaching. He’s been the defensive coordinator at perennial state-power Longview since 2006 in addition to stops at Odessa Permian, Pilot Point and Stamford.
