Stephenville suffered a loss and celebrated a victory at the same time in district 8-4A boys soccer Tuesday.
Abilene Wylie dominated the Yellow Jackets, 4-0, to clinch the district title after the teams split the crown last season. Still, the Jackets found solace in a Brownwood loss that guaranteed Stephenville a top 3 finish and a spot in the state playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.
“Now we just have to focus on winning our last two games and going in second and not third,” said Stephenville coach Ramsay Wright. “We’re ahead of Killeen right now. We just have to make sure it stays that way.”
Abilene Wylie wasted no time taking control, as the Bulldogs got on the board just five minutes into the game, then stretched the advantage to 2-0 with 8 minutes left in the opening half.
Any wind left in Stephenville’s sails vanished shortly after the break, when Wylie made it 3-0 at the 35-minute mark of the second. A garbage-time goal with 5 minutes remaining provided the final tally.
“We didn’t really challenge them much offensively,” said Wright. “We were just as cold as the weather.”
Stephenville hosts its final home match of the year on Friday against San Angelo Lakeview. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., following JV action at 5:30 p.m.
