DURANT, Okla. – The Tarleton TexAnn softball team will venture north of the Red River this weekend when they travel to Durant, Okla. to participate in the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament. The TexAnns will play six of the seven teams from the LSC North Division, including Southeastern Oklahoma State University, who is currently ranked No. 4 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association polls.
The TexAnns are coming off of a three-game sweep of Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M. Tarleton is currently 20-15 and in third place with a 5-4 record in divisional play.
The TexAnns will begin play today at 1 p.m. when they face the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos, who are currently ranked No. 9 in the South Central Region, are led offensively by senior catcher Alley Roberts. Roberts, a native of Pawnee, Okla. is currently batting .390 with 10 homeruns and 28 RBI. Roberts is also 4-6 on stolen base attempts. Central Oklahoma is 18-8 on the season and is 10-2 in north division play. UCO is batting .283 as a team.
Leading the Bronchos in the circle is junior Molly Shivers. Shivers is 10-2 on the season, with a 2.52 ERA and 85 strikeouts. Freshman Rachael Steverson has started ten games and made 15 appearances this season, posting an ERA of 1.46 and recording 31 strikeouts. Also pitching for UCO is Brittany Zimmerman. Zimmerman is 2-1 on the season with a 5.38 ERA. The Bronchos have a team ERA of 2.69.
The second game today will begin at 3 p.m. and will pit the TexAnns against the Tigers of East Central. East Central is 10-17 on the season and currently 3-13 in conference play.
Offensively the Tigers are led by Hillary Hughes. Hughes, a junior from Ringling, Okla., is batting .357 on the season with 15 RBI. Hilary Kuestersteffen (.350), Desiree’ Nordie (.337), Nicole Sanchez (.321), and Emily Kennemer (.320) are all batting above .300 for the Tigers. The Tigers are led in the circle by Randee Crockett. Crockett is 6-6 on the season with an ERA of 4.03. ECU has a team ERA of 5.09.
In the first game on Saturday, the TexAnns will square off against the Lady Aggies of Cameron. Cameron is 22-14 on the year with an 8-4 mark in conference play. The Lady Aggies are led offensively by senior Jenna Boren. Boren, a native of Waurika, Okla., is currently batting .414 on the season with 11 homeruns, 29 RBI, and a .828 slugging percentage.
Leading the Lady Aggies in the circle is Carrie Harvey. Harvey is 12-5 on the season with a 1.75 ERA and 122 strikeouts. Cameron has a team ERA of 2.84.
Tarleton swept Cameron in Stephenville earlier this season, defeating the Lady Aggies in two games, 5-4 and 3-2, respectively. The Lady Aggies did, however, defeat the TexAnns 8-2 in the Spa City Classic in Hot Springs, Ark. on Feb. 21.
Game two on Saturday will feature Tarleton and Midwestern State. MSU is led by standout freshman Nicki Duff. Duff, a native of Plano, is batting .423 on the season and leads the Mustangs in stolen bases and stolen base attempts, going 13-14.
In the pitching circle, the Mustangs are led by Brittney Tanner. Tanner is currently 10-3 with a 2.94 ERA and 89 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Mustangs is Katie Petersen. Petersen is 9-4 on the season with a 2.04 ERA and 101 strikeouts. Midwestern has a team ERA of 2.80.
In the first game on Sunday, Tarleton will face the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma. SWOSU is currently led by junior Stacy Creger. Hailing from Mustang, Okla, Creger currently holds a batting average of .398 with seven homeruns and 24 RBI. Other batters of note for the Bulldogs are Brittany Strickland (.387), Laiken Lester (.364), Deven Brandt (.333), and Katie Raines (.321). Laiken leads the Bulldogs on the bases with 11 stolen bases on 11 attempts. The Bulldogs currently have a .284 team batting average.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs in the circle is Katie Raines. Raines is 3-7 on the season with an ERA of 3.19. Also making multiple appearances for SWOSU is Alex Zukerman. Zukerman is 3-7 on the season with a 6.08 ERA.
Currently ranked No. 4 in the nation and No. 1 in the region, the Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm will present the biggest challenge for the TexAnns. Earlier in the season , Tarleton was able to take two of three games from SOSU, defeating the then No. 9 Savage Storm in games two (3-2) and game three (3-1) after losing game one 1-0.
Offensively the Savage Storm is led by Bailey Mathes, who leads the team with a .444 batting average. Mathes is currently leading the team with 47 RBI but has struck out 23 times. Both Erika Bernal and Marjorie Johnson are leading the team with 11 homeruns apiece. The Savage Storm has a team batting average of .321.
The Savage Storm is led in the pitching circle by Marjorie Johnson. Johnson, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., is currently posting and ERA of .77 with a 15-1 record. Johnson has struck out 240 batters. Also pitching for the Savage Storm is Jami McAdoo. McAdoo is 10-2 on the season with a 2.15 ERA. SOSU has a team ERA of 1.68.
