ARLINGTON - The Tarleton women's basketball team erased a 13-point deficit in the second half to take a one-point lead with 1:41 remaining, but Texas-Arlington scored the games final three points to down the TexAnns 67-65 in an exhibiton game at Texas Hall on Saturday.
D'Anna dingler knocked down a three-point shot with :03 seconds remaining in the first half and the TexAnns went into the locker room down 35-31.
Things would not be easy for the TexAnns in the begining of the second half as UTA's Candice Champion made a lay-up with 15:04 left to play to put the Mavericks up 48-35.
Then with just over five minutes to play, Tarleton applied the pressure and went on a 12-2 run to go up by one point (65-64) with 1:41 left to play. The TexAnns were unable to hit a shot and turned the ball over twice and Kiarra Shofner's free-throw with :03 seconds left turned out to be the difference in the game.
The TexAnns were led by junior JoAnne Jones who led all scorers with 22 points on 10 of 17 shooting and grabbed 16 rebounds for her second double-double in preseason play. Dingler followed with 13 points as the only other player to score in double figures for the TexAnns.
Erin Dixon led the Mavericks, recording a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The TexAnns were able to outshoot the Mavericks, 44 percent to 41 percent, but were just 50 percent from the charity stripe. UTA shot 63 percent from the free—throw line.
The TexAnns will open their regular season this Saturday, Nov. 15 against Incarnate Word in the first game of the Cardinal Classic in San Antonio. Tip-off is set for 2:30 at the McDermott Center.
