After a lightning delay that lasted an hour and 25 minutes, the Stephenville Honeybees defeated Mineral Wells 2-0 Friday night in their Region I-4A quarterfinal girls soccer playoff game at Aledo High School.
The victory sends coach Casey Weil's defending state champion Honeybees (23-3) into the regional tournament at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletic Complex in North Richland Hills. They will take on Midlothian Heritage in the regional semifinal round at 11 a.m. Friday, April 13. The winner of that game will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday for the right to advance to the final four at the state tournament.
In Friday's win, the Honeybees gained a 1-0 lead on a goal by Ciara Johnston off an assist by Claire Choate, with about 10 minutes left in the first half. Gracie Bales provided the second goal, again off a Choate assist, with about eight minutes left in the second half.
The game began on time, at 5 p.m., but the lightning caused the game to be delayed with 26:53 on the clock in the first half.
Weil said of the delay, "For me as a coach, it was quite annoying. The girls, it didn't seem to affect them."
