The Stephenville High School varsity girls track team won the annual Stephenville Optimist Relays Thursday at Henderson Junior High, and the varsity boys finished as runner-up to Brownwood.

Meanwhile, SHS won the junior varsity girls team title and the JV boys were fourth.

The Honeybees got first-place efforts from Hailey Martin in the 100-meter hurdles, Shayden Toof in the triple jump and Alyssa Northcutt in the discus. Martin’s time of 15.31 seconds in the 100 hurdles was her personal best in that event.

For the SHS varsity boys, Krece Nowak won both the long jump and triple jump, and also scored points in the 100-meter run, and as the first leg on the 1,600-meter relay, in which the Yellow Jackets earned fourth place.

“We had a lot of good things going on,” SHS girls head track coach Jeremiah Butchee said Friday morning. “It’s great to win our meet, especially a meet like ours that has some very, very good teams. There were a lot of high-quality teams, and it was good to be able to win it. We still have things to be fixed before district rolls around.”

The Honeybees won the varsity girls division with 146.5 points, followed by Abilene Wylie with 117.5 and Brownwood with 109.

In the final varsity boys team standings, Class 5A Granbury won with 241 points. SHS was runner-up with 94 and Mineral Wells third with 85.

The SHS junior varsity girls won with 155 points, ahead of second-place Graham’s 137.5. The JV boys title went to Granbury with 241 points. The JV Stephenville boys were fourth with 84.

The District 8-4A meet will be Wednesday and Thursday at Heritage High School in Midlothian.

It was announced at the meet that in memory of beloved former longtime Stephenville High School teacher Dr. Rick Sherrod, the 1,600-meter relay events that close the Optimist Relays each year have been named the Doc Sherrod 4 by 400 Relays in his honor. Sherrod passed away Tuesday after a brief battle with cancer.
