No. 25 Tarleton outscored Western New Mexico 14-3 in 12 innings to sweep the opening day of the four-game series in Stephenville as a part of the inaugural CFC Awareness Weekend at Tarleton State University.
Game 1: No. 25 Tarleton 6, Western New Mexico 3
Tarleton got five combined RBI from Tanna Huie and Karli Herronto win the series opener against Western New Mexico in Stephenville Friday evening.
Western New Mexico scored all three of its runs via the long ball as the Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot in the opening inning - a lead that held up through three and a half - and then a solo shot in the top of the fifth.
Meanwhile, Tarleton started scoring in the third and never stopped as an RBI single from Meghann Wrinkle put the TexAnns on the board in the bottom of the third.
Huie and Herron added a two spot in the fourth when Huie led the inning off with a home run. Marisa Flores followed up with a double and then came around to score on an RBI single from Herron. Herron struck again in the fifth with an RBI double before Huie capped off the scoring in the sixth with a two-run double to left center to plat Wrinkle and Georgia Capell.
Meanwhile, Jordan Withrow was on her way to her 15th win of the season in the circle. The sophomore right-hander tossed all seven innings to earn the victory, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out nine.
Huie led the offense with a 2-4 day at the dish with two runs scored and three RBI while Herron was 2-3 with two RBI. Capell and Wrinkle had two hits at the top of the order while Nyka Wood, Marisa Flores, and Elizabeth Svienty had one hit each.
Game 2: No. 25 Tarleton 8, Western New Mexico 0 (5)
Tarleton kept its offensive momentum rolling right along to support Megan Rosewell who tossed her second complete-game shutout in the last two weeks.
The TexAnns put together the makings of a big inning as Capell, Maddie Quintanar and Nyka Wood reach to load the bases right off the bat. Megan Durante got Tarleton on the board with a two-RBI double before two hard-hit line drives into gloves and a groundball put a halt to the inning after a 2-0 advantage.
Herron struck again in the third as the junior teed off for a two-run blast to deep left field that extended the lead out to 4-0.
In the fourth, Tarleton broke things wide open as Nyka Wood drove in one with a sacrifice fly and Amanda Conner and Lexi Grimaldostepped off the bench to deliver pinch-hit RBI - Conner had one and Grimaldo had two - to put the TexAnns up 8-0. The Mustangs tried to extend the game with a double in the gap in the top of the fifth, but a successful relay from Huie to Svienty to Wood cut the runner down at home for the second out of the inning en route to the early win.
Quintanar had two hits while Capell, Durante, Conner, Grimaldo, and Herron had one hit each for Tarleton.
In the circle, the defending LSC Pitcher of the Week, Megan Rosewell, was dealing once again.
The senior right-hander twirled a five-inning, complete-game shutout while allowing only five hits and a walk. She struck out two.
Tarleton will return to action at 12 p.m. Saturday for a doubleheader against the Mustangs. Only the first game will count towards conference standings as part of the traditional three-game conference series. The second game will qualify only as an in-region game.
