With Friday’s 3-0 boys soccer triumph at home over the Mineral Wells Rama, the Stephenville Yellow Jackets posted their third consecutive District 4-4A win after dropping their first two league games.
The Yellow Jackets, 13-7 on the season, are currently tied with the Rams for second place in the district standings, at 4-3, behind first-place Abilene Wylie.
First-year head coach Taylor Smith’s Yellow Jackets are off this week with spring break, but will resume district play on Tuesday, March 20, against Wylie in Abilene.
In the win over Mineral Wells, J.J. Saldana scored for the Jackets, along with Luis Carrillo and Hunter Melton.
The Jackets went up 1-0 at about the 20-minute mark in the first half, then added their next two goals in the second half.
“For the most part, we played like the rest of our games in district,” Smith said. “We finished our opportunities. We’ve got some good momentum.”
Smith indicated he is concerned by the the mounting injury list. Sophomore Jorge Gallegos, the team’s leading scorer, may be out for the rest of the season because of an eye injury.
All together, six of the 18 players who started the season on the varsity are currently sidelined with various injuries.
Smith said that about three players are being moved up from the junior varsity to help with the team’s depth down the stretch.
Complicating the personnel shortage is the fact that Eliut Reyes must sit out the next two games after receiving his 10th penalty card.
