Stephenville High School’s Jessica Ebeling won first place and Blaine Gluck took second as both qualified for the state tournament with their performances in the girls regional powerlifting meet held Saturday in Temple.

They were part of the group of seven SHS girls who qualified for the regional event held at the Ralph Wilson Youth Club, and coach Eric Rivas noted that none of them are seniors.

The top two in each weight class qualified to advance to the state meet.

Mallory Gunter was close, taking home a third-place medal in her weight class for the Honeybees. Teammates Aubreyanna Ziegler and Norma Hernandez of SHS each placed fifth in their respective classes.

“Very proud of each of our girls,” Rivas stated. “They all came out and competed well. All of our girls are coming back next year and we expect great things from them. Coach Fanning did an excellent job working with them.”

The Honeybees earned third place overall in the girls team standings in Temple.

Ebeling won the 198-pound class with a total of 905 pounds lifted.

Gluck was the runner-up in the 105-pound class with 655 pounds.

The other SHS girls regional qualifiers were Cheney Carrillo and Marianna Reyes.

Gunter’s lift total Saturday was 775 pounds, in the 181-pound weight class. Ziegler totaled 745 pounds in the 198-pound class. Hernandez lifted a total of 830 pounds in the 220-pound class.

The boys regional meet is scheduled March 10 in Smithville. Issic De La Cruz is the lone member of the Yellow Jackets’ boys powerlifting team who advanced to regional.

The girls state meet will be March 17 at the Extraco Events Center in Waco. The boys state meet will be March 24 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
